Copper plates on display
Hidden but fundamental, copper plates make printmaking possible. In Europe there are three major collections of this kind: the Chalcographie du Louvre, the Calcografía Nacional in the Prado and the Calcografia at the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica in Rome. In the past few years there has been an explosion of scholarship on this less explored topic in printmaking studies, see for example the special number of «Memofonte» dedicated to collections of woodblocks and copper plates (2016) and the Block Plates and Stones conference in London (2017).
Now, the exhibition Graver pour le roi. Collection de la Chalcographie du Louvre makes more than 60 plates available: they relate to works on paper held at the Louvre and at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and focus on the image of the king and its dissemination between the second half of XVII and XVIII centuries. The exhibition will remain open until 20th May 2019. More information here.
Until 30 June, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt explores Picasso's experiments with printmaking techniques through an exhibition that features more than 60 etchings, lithographs and linoleum cuts. A special section within the exhibition is dedicated to the well-known Suite Vollard.
